Our Story
Derek Heart® was founded in 2015 by Derek Johnson, a fashion designer who dreamed of creating a clothing line that made people “feel beautiful on the outside as well as the inside.” Derek grew up sketching fashion designs and making his own clothes, driven by the desire to spread joy through creative expression.
After graduating top of his class from fashion school, Derek began his professional career designing for major clothing retailers. While he appreciated the opportunity to bring his visions to life, he felt constrained by mass production and lacking the personal touch he craved. Derek longed to inject heart and meaning into the entire process – from fabric sourcing to garment construction to customer experience. And so, Derek Heart® was born.
Starting off small with a limited but lovingly curated collection of dresses, Derek focused on sustainably sourced textiles and impeccable craftsmanship. Every item was meticulously designed to flatter a variety of body types. The response was overwhelming, with customers raving about the magical fit and ability to feel beautiful in their own skin.
Spurred on by this positive feedback, Derek expanded the product line to include more clothing categories like jumpsuits, sweaters, pants and shirts while upholding the same ethical standards and attention to detail. He assembled a talented team of pattern makers, sewers, customer service reps and photographers who shared his values of spreading joy through fashion.
Today, the Derek Heart® brand offers effortlessly elegant options for any occasion. We’ve grown from Derek’s humble home studio into a thriving company, but remain committed to our founder’s vision of helping everyone discover and embrace their inner glow.

Our Design Process
Great style begins with inspiration. Our design process starts by gathering ideas from the latest runway trends, street style, art, nature, architecture and pop culture. We look for themes, colors, silhouettes, and details that will bring the designer’s vision to life.
Next, we carefully select luxurious fabrics that drape beautifully and feel wonderful against the skin. Our textiles include eco-friendly options like organic cotton, recycled polyester and TencelTM as well as luxe silks, soft knits and stretchy ponte knits. Vibrant patterns and colorful prints let our clothes make a bold statement.
Our talented design team sketches initial concepts and creates sample garments to perfect the fit. We meticulously test our prototypes on multiple body types to ensure a flawless, inclusive fit with room to breathe and move comfortably.
Once the samples are approved, our production partners bring the designs to life with diligent care and attention to quality. We oversee each step of the process and inspect finished garments before selecting pieces for our collections.

Meet Our Founder
Derek Heart was founded by its namesake designer, Derek Johnson. Ever since he could hold a pencil, Derek was sketching fashion designs. He honed his craft at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, graduating at the top of his class. Derek gained experience at major retailers before branching out to launch his own line.
Derek Heart was born from his desire to spread joy through ethical, beautifully-made clothing. Derek brings his passion for style and commitment to quality to work every day. He finds inspiration in travel, nature, architecture and everyday moments.
Above all, Derek loves hearing how our clothes help boost confidence. Keeping customers happy drives his innovation and creativity. Outside of work, you can find Derek thrifting vintage pieces, reading, trying new recipes or searching for the next design inspiration.

- Sustainable fabrics: We use high-quality natural fibers and eco-friendly textiles including organic cotton, linen, recycled polyester and TencelTM. These fabrics have a lighter footprint without sacrificing luxury.
- Efficient pattern making: Our zero-waste pattern making reduces fabric waste by meticulously placing pattern pieces to fully utilize yardage. All remaining scraps are donated or recycled.
